2 Non-Profit Training Opportunities
Schoolcraft County Organizations Offer Free Training Opportunities to Strengthen Local Nonprofits
MANISTIQUE, MI — Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce (STC) and Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (SMH) are offering two free training opportunities this fall designed to provide local nonprofit organizations, community groups, volunteers, and emerging leaders with valuable knowledge and resources to strengthen their organizations and increase their impact throughout Schoolcraft County.
The two training opportunities include Charitable Gaming Training, hosted by Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital on September 16, and Nonprofit Essentials Workshop: Key Practices for Success, hosted by Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce on October 1.
Both opportunities support the goals identified in the Schoolcraft County Resiliency Plan, which identified nonprofit capacity building, volunteer engagement, leadership development, and community collaboration as important priorities for strengthening the county's long-term resilience and quality of life.
Charitable Gaming Training — September 16
Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital will host a free Charitable Gaming Training on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Cornerstone Building Conference Rooms 1 & 2 at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
The training will be led by representatives from the Michigan Charitable Gaming Division and is open to all nonprofit and community organizations interested in learning more about charitable gaming in Michigan.
Whether an organization is new to charitable gaming or simply looking for a refresher, the training will provide an opportunity to ask questions directly of experts and gain a better understanding of Michigan's charitable gaming requirements and opportunities.
Topics will include:
Which charitable gaming license does an organization need
How to get started
Required paperwork and reporting
Accountability of gaming proceeds
Worker requirements
Banking requirements
Compliance with Michigan charitable gaming regulations
Bingo and raffles
Progressive card raffles and charity game tickets
The training is open to nonprofit organizations, community organizations, veteran organizations, booster clubs, churches, and anyone interested in fundraising through charitable gaming. Free refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Nonprofit Essentials Workshop — October 1
Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce (STC), through its Strategic Planning and Governance Training (SPGT) Committee, will host a complimentary Nonprofit Essentials Workshop: Key Practices for Success on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Cornerstone Conference Room at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
The workshop is part of STC's ongoing implementation of the Schoolcraft County Resiliency Plan and builds on the SPGT Committee's efforts to strengthen community leadership through programs such as Community Academy and I Do Solemnly Swear, a training program designed to help local elected and appointed officials better understand their roles and responsibilities.
"Nonprofits play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life throughout Schoolcraft County," said Victoria George, Executive Director of Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce. "These organizations provide essential services, create opportunities for community engagement, and bring people together around causes that matter. Providing nonprofit leaders and volunteers with access to training and resources helps strengthen not only individual organizations, but our entire community."
"One of the goals identified through the Schoolcraft County Resiliency Plan was to strengthen the organizations that serve our communities," said Joan Ecclesine, Mayor of the City of Manistique and Chair of the Strategic Planning and Governance Training Committee. "These training opportunities give our nonprofit leaders and volunteers practical information they can use to improve their organizations, while also creating opportunities for greater collaboration throughout Schoolcraft County. Strong nonprofits, effective governance, and engaged volunteers are all critical components of a vibrant and resilient community."
The Nonprofit Essentials Workshop will cover several key areas, including:
Parliamentary Procedures and Robert's Rules of Order
Establishing and maintaining a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
Understanding nonprofit financial statements
IRS and Michigan LARA compliance requirements
Volunteer recruitment and talent-matching strategies
Introducing Victory Volunteers
The October 1 workshop will also include the introduction of Victory Volunteers, a capstone project developed by participants of the 2026 Community Academy.
Victory Volunteers is designed to connect community members who have specialized skills, knowledge, and talents with nonprofit organizations seeking volunteer expertise. By helping match volunteers with organizations in need, the initiative aims to strengthen nonprofit capacity, expand community engagement, and create additional opportunities for residents to make a meaningful difference in Schoolcraft County.
Participants will leave the workshop with a stronger understanding of nonprofit governance, financial oversight, regulatory compliance, organizational sustainability, and volunteer engagement. They will also learn how their organizations can participate in the Victory Volunteers initiative.
The workshop is open to nonprofit board members, staff, advisors, volunteers, community leaders, and individuals interested in starting a nonprofit organization. Attendance is free; however, pre-registration is required.
