Haywire Grade Trail
The Haywire Grade Trail, stretching 32 miles across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula from Intake Park in Manistique to Shingleton, is the state's first rail trail and the Upper Peninsula's inaugural year-round multiuse trail. Following the old Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad route, it features a mix of sand, gravel, and coarse limestone suitable for snowmobiles, ATVs, and fat-tire bikes. Mile markers guide you through a secluded second-growth forest, with a small grocery store in Steuben serving as a nod to the once-thriving logging camps that disappeared after the railroad was abandoned. Converted into a recreational trail in 1970, the Haywire Grade Trail celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020 with special events for various recreational users. Recognized as a Pure Michigan Designated Trail and a heritage trail, it includes 11 historical interpretive kiosks detailing the region's natural and cultural history. Trailheads are located on M-94 just south of Shingleton (with parking available east of Tanglewood Restaurant on M-28), at Intake Park in Manistique, and at Jack Pine Lodge on M-94, halfway between Manistique and Shingleton.
